Does anybody know what the silver bit in the middle of the sump plate is and what it is for? I could not find it in the manual.

I think it's sound damping - see the horrible gunge that many sixes (I've seen more of those than fours) have over the timing cover, but on the outside.
Which sump does this come from?

  Its from a J type overdrive. There seams to be silver on top and and a brown coloured pad underneath.

    Looks to me like it may be a magnetic swarf trap. The overdrive hydraulics don't like being gunged up with the metallic residue of gears, bearings, synchro rings etc that swim aorund in the gearbox lubricating oil, hence the need for filtration. A magntic pad in the sump will stop the ferrous swarf getting into the pump and hydraulic valves and pistons. If it's like the D type overdrive, there is probably also a gauze filter or two to trap bronze swarf and non metallic muck.

      Yes, it's a magnet. The brown stuff is just glue holding it on.
