Being blunt, why the hell should we be fair to the vendor?
To suggest that it will fit a Herald or Vitesse CANNOT be right as the two cars (and their spin-offs, Spitfire and GT6) ALWAYS had
different bellhousings. This is not a question of materials, (alloy or cast iron) but of size and and location of starter motor,
and clutch slave cylinder/release bearing arrangements.
While there is a clear responsibility on the part of the buyer to ensure he/she knows what they are bidding on, there is also a
responsibility on the part of sellers (who have the part in front of them and know more of its source and background) to ensure
"adverts" (for that in effect is what they are) are accurate and not misleading.
If we saw adverts from traders, or encountered such errors at an autojumble, we would probabnly take issue with the seller. It's
more difficult to take issue with and ebay seller, but equally, more important because, unlike an autojumble, or a traditional
auction, there is little opportunity to inspect the goods prior to bidding.
There is of course the possibility of genuine ignorance or mistakes, but I am convinced there are sellers out there who are guilty
of plain misrepresentation. Perhaps it's a pity that only actual purchasers have the opportunity to give feedback!
There ARE fully reliable vendors out there. I recently took a pretty big gamble and bought a car unseen off ebay. And the vendor
was actually selling the car on a friend's behalf, BUT I have since found the description given fully accurate and am well pleased
with the value for money of what I've bought. (Whether or not it was a good idea is a completely different matter and purely down
to my initial impulsiveness and subsequent cold feet rather than any reflection on the vendor. The SP250 is quite a beast. It may
have a chassis, but it's no Herald, Spitfire or Vitesse, either to drive or work on!)
I am not very familiar with single rail gearboxes, but I seem to recall that the earlier 3 rail bell housings need a hole boring in
the gearbox mounting face to accommodate the main selector rod which moves forward beyond the front of the gearbox casing when
engaging (2nd and 4th?) gears.

Martin,
You've got a point. I was just giving him the benefit of the doubt because maybe I hadn't phrased the question clearly, as with
my initial post.
