Simple answer is no.
The gearbox needs to be on an overdrive already - they're different internally.

James is quite right here, I was in a similar position not so long back. My next port of call would be to Mike Papworth, the gearbox specialist at Canley Classics. If you take both gearboxes to him, i'm sure he will be able to carry out the conversion for you and make any repairs necessary. The reason why you cant swap the boxes over is because the mainshaft is much longer on the O/D box. The mainshaft tip also wears, which could cause you problems if you take the box to pieces yourself.
I'd suggest this is the easiest and most stress free route to follow - stripping out the gearbox the second time round is not fun! Get it right the first time!!! You'll also need a shorter propshaft. If you check back through the archives, you'll see the problems I had with mine!

Not only is the mainshaft a different length, but rearward of the gearbox itself it is completely different. I has different splines and a locator for the O/d oil pump.
For Mick to make the change the gearbox will have to be completely rebuilt and a new mainshaft sourced. My guess is that this will cost about as much as a new g/box anyway, so you may simply want to go for the exchange instead. ... &163;225 if you do that and you get the full exchange value for you existing box.
PS I know there is (was) a large backlog of gearboxes to b ebuilt at canleys this last week as one of them was mine
Hmm, come to think of it I now have a spare mainshaft for an O/d gearbox, but I'd have to sell you it if you want it as it will affect my exchange value when I take my defective box back (layshaft bearing failure).

Hi,
I'm prepared to be shot down here but
I thought that you could take the mainshaft out of the o/d equipped box and then straight swop it into the non overdrive box using the good gearsets from that box. (Endfloats etc to be checked).
The adaptor plate and overdrive should then go straight onto the back of the good box.
That does assume that the o/d mainshaft is not damaged in any way.

Yes.. that is essentially true. But in order to swap the shafts you have to dismantle the enitre box exept for the lay shaft removal. So it's pretty much the same job as a rebuild. I'll betcha Mick can do it in record time but it may simply be simpler and even possibly cheaper jut to buy a new one.
Of course, if you can do it yourself, then it isn't a problem.
