Hi Viv,
I believe the '71 spitf was fitted with the Laycock D type overdrive mounted on the back of a three-rail gear box with synchromesh on all forward gears
(Ooo - I sound like a manual

).
The 1500 had the single rail gearbox with J type overdrive, but the problem is more with the input shaft as on the 1500 it has 20 splines and the 1300
clutch plate requires 10. You need a conversion clutch plate (Part No GCP244) which is fits the 1300 flywheel and the single rail input shaft.
But I would suggest you actually go for the 1500 engine, three-rail box and D type overdrive combination, but you will need the conversion clutch plate
which is Part No GCP103. As I don't think the D type will mount onto the three-rail box - I must stress I'm not an authority on the overdrive thing
though so I cold be wrong there, but if you've already go the box/od sorted you may as well stick with it.
The 1500 is a much better engine than the MKIV 1300 anyway (same engine - longer stroke - more torque) and the overdrive combination will make the car
cruise like a dream.
Cheers
