Single SU Carburettor?

Posted By : Mark Telkman, 21-Nov-2004, 08:32pm

Evening, Gents...

I've recently acquired my first Spitfire, a 1971 MkIV - the bodywork and chassis seems fairly sound, but both the interior and engine are in a dreadful state, hence no picture of the carb in question - the rest of the engine bay is too painful to look at. I'd love to get the car looking and running nicely, but severe lack of funds will be the biggest issue. At the moment it looks like I'll just be trying to keep it going whilst undoing some of the bodging previous people have done, particularly the awful wiring. Though saying that, my list of things I want to do is getting longer and longer.

Anyway, to the point in question... I was under the impression that the only single carburettor Spitfires were the IV/1500 for the American market, which were ZS. Mine seems to have a single SU, though I'm yet to identify exactly which - I've not had time to do anything aside from drive it home yet. If I'm right in thinking they should all be twin installations, why would someone convert to a single? Fuel economy? Cheaper repair? Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pondering putting a twin SU installation back on, though obviously that's a fair bit of work, what with needing a new inlet manifold, tuning etc. I guess it's not that high on my list. As impressive as a nice Weber set up might be, I don't think I'd benefit from it at all with the road use I'll be putting the car through, particularly given the cost. Any comments or recommendations will be greatly appreciated... with limited budget and experience, I'm sure it'll all come in helpful...

Mark
