Anything and everything Spitfire.

Well, as expected my post-head-gasket Spitfire life has been far from straightforward. I won't bore you all with the many depressing sagas that have
happened since Monday, but could do with a little help on the current one...
Just after balancing the carbs for mixture and idle speed, I appeared to suffer a split in the small flexible pipe that runs from the metal pipe attached
to the air filter to the rear float chamber lid. Petrol lies on the lid...
I think (though not necessarily) as a result of this, the previously sweet-running car has started banging violently by blowing fuel out of either carb
throat when the throttles are opened (whether gently or quickly, but it's worse when you floor the throttle). Result is that the car is completely
undriveable, with no power above idle speed.
I've had a peek in the float chamber, and all seems to be well - no holes in the float and the needle valve seems to be doing its job admirably.
It's only a 37000 mile car, so I wouldn't expect a badly worn carb.
Has anyone had this before? I'm hoping I can just buy 2 inches of flexible fuel pipe, bung it on and all will be well, unless this banging points to
something more sinister...
I really need the car this weekend, so any pointers would be very welcome!
Thanks in advance,
Gavin
