Hi all.

A few weeks back, i changed my standard manifold and exhaust for a tubular exhaust and pheonix pipe. As i was tightening up the final stud on the head (the one closest to the bulkhead), it sheared off flush with the manifold, about 7-8mm proud of the head.

This week i thought i might get all the little jobs at that end of the engine done, going to replace my waxstats for normal jets, totally clean and rebuilt the carbs and inlet manifold, and of course change all the old studs for new ones, properly greased up.

Now, with the manifolds off and out of the way, i am left with 2 studs i cannot remove, they are both the end studs which i think are a slightly different size. Obviously there's the one that sheared off, but the one on the other end has a stripped thread at the top of the stud, neither has enough thread on it to do the 2 bolt method.

I have discounted the idea of using an 'easy-out' as all i ever here about these things is badness!

My next step will be to dremmel a slot in the end of the studs and try to unscrew them, this fails, then i would like to know which of these tools would be better for the job, or if anyone knows of any other tool i should be using.

Does either one of these tools require more than 6-7mm of thread to work?
I dont really know how either of them works, so if anyone has any experience with them, any advice would be much appreciated.

Before you shell out on these things try a Stillson Pipe Wrench

more versatile than extractors and just as tough if you have something to hang onto. They get tighter as they grip and are tough enough to take some abuse.
Use heat on the stud and try and carefully use some thermal shock to dislodge it - I say carefully because you don't want to shock the head! Head it up until it's as hot as your blowlamp will get it now cool it down quickly with some water. Then get the Stillsons on it and an extension bar (steel tube over the handle) and give it all you've got!

I have an old one of those knocking about in the garage somewhere. It's a bit rusty, but should do the trick.

How on earth do you get it to grip properly? surely you can only get it 'finger tight' using the adjuster wheel thing?

Yes, you can only get the jaws finger tight, but on a genuine Stilson wrench, that is only half the story. The movable jaw also pivots so that as you apply a twisting force to the handle the jaw tightens up and grips the workpiece harder. The more force you apply to the handle, the tighter the grip.

Think i'll go down to the local hardware store and get a proper stillson, i'm sure there's far more uses for a wrench like that as apposed to a stud extractor that has only one use.

When the Stillson is on the nut you adjust it so it's tight but even then it won't be very tight as the head of a Stillson wobbles about a bit! Once you start applying force it tightens and grips hard - the more pressure you apply the tighter it gets and on a good 'un the jaws will bite hard into the stud - it's satisfying destruction!
