Wiper woes

I'm having problems with my windscreen wipers.

The passenger side over shoots the windscreen and protrudes the off the car. Its resting position is actually below the windscreen rubber, so no room for adjustment.

After having it caught in the passenger door for the second side (squashing the chrome wiper), I have resolved to fix it.

The driver side wiper is fine, so I'm at a bit of a loss why, as the worm screw is fixed and gearing of the wiper cog is also fixed.

As the park has started to fail I think a new motor is in order.

My questions are, any ideas why I have the problem with the overshoot in wiper blade and do old Landrovers use the same wiper motor as 1500 spitfires as I have been offered one?

I would suspect that an incorrect wheelbox has been fitted to the passenger side at some point. The smaller the cog in the wheelbox the bigger the swept arc. A new motor will not cure this, and you can buy the self parking switch for the motor as a seperate item. Hope this helps!

  I never even thought about the wheel box...why oh why would someone do that (its been like that for 7 years plus now ). I have a spare so will try it out. I didn't realise the self park was a separate part. Any advise on swapping it over.

    Before getting too complicated, this isn't just a case of the wiper arm being fitted in the wrong place on the spline is it? When in use, how far over to the centre does the blade go? Is there scope to prise the arm off, move it around slightly and replace it?
    
    As mentioned, the parking switch can be replaced, but may only need cleaning / adjusting. Over the years the grease in the wiper motor can assume the consistency of treacle. Undo the screws and take the cover off the top of the motor and you'll see what I mean. May be worth cleaning all this out and regreasing. Depending on the model of motor, the parking switch will either be a sprung blade pressing on a track in the big gearwheel, or will be a plastic switch screwed underneath (near where the wires go in) that is operated by a slider. In this latter type the switch is mounted by screws in slots so the switch can slid to adjust when the park stops etc.

      The earlier type park switches can also be adjusted, by simply turning the domed cover that hides it with the screws for the gearbox cover losened off a bit. They're quite a fiddle to get right though!

        before you dismantle anything make sure the bundy tubes are firmly located and clamped tightly onto the wheel boxes

        I might just replace the whole unit as its quicker and I have one to hand. Another weekend striping out the interior......at least i can do it with the roof down and get a tan!
