Hi as some/most of you will know, (see the last post in electrical) I am doing quite a bit of work to my mk2 spit.
One thing I was hoping to do, was to upgrade my window wiper motor.
somthing I personly think gets neglectid.
I would be easy to change the wiper motor for a gt6 two speed item, only I cant find one (having posted a wanted add on this site and looking on ebay) and
two, I have been told they aint really much better.
dont quote me on this, but was told that all they did with the two speed motor was to half the power, and on a light drizzely day, the wiper motor on half
power, aint up to much.
The later 1500 type motor wont fit my car un-less I use the the hole 1500 system inc wiper wheels/rod.
It will look out of place (me thinks) and I will need to re-drill a hole in the bolkhead for the pushrod/wheel things (very tecnical, but I dont know what
is called)
My question that I would like some help with is: how do I upgrade my original wiper motor to a higher spec.
I phone a motor repairor, and he said it is quite simple.
said something on the lines that I could have extra windings to incress the power.
is this some thing that anyone has had done.
I would reather have a intermiten setting that a two speed as the original was not that slow.
it was just a pain in light rain.
If I can have intermiten and two speed all the better.

I haven't tried the re-wind, but would imagine that it would draw more current than standard, so the original cabling may not be up to the job. this
might not be a problem in view of the other work you have planned.
There used to be an after-market accessory which could be bought to add intermittent wipe to a standard set up. unfortunately I can't remeber who did
it. You may be able to source one at an autojumble?
I know that Maplins do a generic timer/delay module, but it would need someone with better electrics skills than me to know how to wire it up.

You could probably use the "plastic box of tricks" from any modern car for the intermittent wipe circuitry. I seem to recall I kept the one from my
Vauxhall Cavalier (after it ended up on its roof!) for just such a purchase, and the Rover Metro that came afterwards had a very similar box (about
the size of a standard relay) plugged into the fuse box if I recall. The box has spade terminals that will probably take standard Lucas connectors,
and the Cavalier one came complete with a wiring diagram on the outside!
These boxes of tricks can also allow you to have a number of wipes after using the screen wash, if you have an electric pump screen washer. (Not a
bad idea, but you really need a bigger screenwash bottle than the Spitfire's original or you'll be filling it every day. The electric pump squirts
a lot more water than the manual one!!!
For a switch, any two position wiper (or similar) switch will do. While probably as rare as the GT6 wiper motor, the switch from a GT6 Mk1 will
match your Spitfire's toggle switches, and a Spitfire light switch (I think) will match the pull switch and has two positions. (The Herald one
certainly does).
The wiper and washer switch from a Toledo/Dolomite would allow you to have an electric screen wash (or use the push contact to allow a single wipe)
as well as wipers on one switch. The wiper function however is by twisting the switch knob rather than pulling, so you might want to use the Toledo
etc square knob, althought I think the round Herald/Spitfire knob will actually fit the spindle.
If you have never found the standard speed to be too slow, I'd spend my effort on an intermittent wipe function rather than a two speed motor, but
I agree that two USEABLE speeds AND intermittent is the best of all.

Thanks for the advise Ian and Chris,
As I have a starter solinoid on the starter motor it has freeded up a little space on the bolckhead.
I was intending to use a bigger washer botal and electric pump, something like the dolamit one.
so a switch with wash and wipers would be good.
I would like to know if any one has had there wiper motor windings upgraded.
this will make the wiper motor more powerfull, and on half speed/power, will still be ok.
the inerniten ideia of using a relay type thing is one I will have to look into.
or does any one know.
