Hi, my mk4 has just failed its mot due to holes in floor where floor meets outer sills. Problem is, a previous owner has welded a false floor inside , on
top of original then filled / sealed and undersealed all under the car. I have removed almost of the underseal/rubbish along the passenger side and found
loads of rust holes along near sill. Pressume drivers side is the same. The car has had new outer sills recently.
Garage has told me best to remove false floor first, cut out rusty original floor, then fit repair panel, but told me original floor that is left may be
too thin to weld too, so need to cut most of floor out to get to good thicker metal. Also mechanic has indicated heel board not too good either.
My problem is i blew all my budget on the car a month ago, so cannot afford garage to do the job £800 ish. Can anyone out there please give me
some advice on cutting out false and old floor / fitting new one. I have welded in past with arc welder at work (but would not call myself a skilled
welder) but told this would be too fearce and need a mig.
If photos would help, i will try to post some later.
Many thanks
Graham

Hi Graham, this is a lot of work, the minute you start digging around you will find that you will need to replace a range of panels and if you haven't
done this before then its not for the faint hearted. I would weigh up the costs and the time that you have available and consider if its worth
'patching' it up for the MOT and then undertaking a 'restoration' a bit at a time or just go for it.
You will need to buy a MIG (or borrow), angle grinder, bolster and chisel lots of protective gear plus all the panel work, I would buy two complete new
floors (£200++) and you will probably need innner A panels (£20+) lots of paint and door gap tools.
To do this properly you would need to remove the sills (£150+) this would give you complete access and of course when you have welded in
your floor to attach the new sills would be very straight forward and at least you will know whats there.
I've attached a picture of my car in progress, if you need anymore photos let me know.
Jason
