I'm looking for a GRP bonnet for my Mk.IV Spitfire. Judging by previous posts on this site the quality varies a lot, so can anyone recommend a
supplier/manufacturer? Also I've heard that the weight difference between the steel and GRP means that the front springs have to be changed, is this true
and if so wouldn't the reduced weight on the front wheels effect the road holding?
Thanks in advance

You need to decide weather you are going for a very light race bonnet, or one which has some strength in it fits nicely. They both represent a weight
saving.
I certainly haven't changed my springs, but they were unrated any way. I did a combination of mods when I replaced my bonnet, so I don't know which is
directly to thank for my new burst of speed.
The road holding at the front wont be an issue, its the rear which has always been a bit light on Spits.
My advice is to get one from eBay second hand, as they tend to sell very cheaply and being fibreglass they don't rot although crazing can be a problem.
Then you can spend the rest of your time/money getting it to fit and look good.
I heard alot of scare stories about fibreglass before I got mine...I had very few problems, and I'm very happy with how it looks.

the stories about grp bonnets being very wobbly is only true if tou fit one without the strenghtening pipework off a steel bonnet
if you graft in mounts for the stiffening tubes they're fine

I had many a conversation with people about them being wobbly and couldn't understand it, it was quite a while untill i realsied that was
why!
I would never have contemplated not putting the frame in! So a very good point Jonathan
