Have fallen foul of the new MOT regs wanting chassis plate details etc.
Despite my advising - very politely- the MOT place my '72 Spit is pre-1980 etc and how to find N/A on the computer database they have declined to complete
the MOT as 'essential info' is missing.
So am getting proper new Comm plate (2 holes where old one was and a worn home-made engraved plate put on chassis instead) made up for my previously messed
about poor old car so anyone else has no excuse.
Have a new blank but need to get it stamped/engraved.
Simple question: are there any restrictions on getting it done - do I need to use a dvla approved scheme or can I just take it to any engraver?
More technically; the colour and trim are no longer original.
Do I get what it was or what it appears to be now? (Can I look ahead to what it will be when finished...yes bit wishful thinking that I guess!) or can I
leave colour/trim blank?
More importantly what is the gross laden weight for a MK4 Spit? Have found other weights and the GLW for a 1500 but not a MK4!
Thanks
AL

Mine passed its MOT without the weight information. I'm looking at the certificate now and the weight box is blank.

Alan, I believe the only info you need is the chassis number, never seen the wieght on a vin plate, my '73 GT6 doesn't have it and neither does my '64
Mini Cooper.
If you have a new colour in mind and you know the code (Triumph colour?) I would certainly have the code engraved at the same time. As for trim code,
have a search on the internet, I think the info you need should be somewhere, everything else seems to be !!
My GT6 vin only shows vehicle number and paint and trim codes.
Steve.

My MOT man just wanted to see the V5 as it makes his life easier!

Thanks,
That all seems to make sense to me. Think I got a bit of a jobsworth. I actually had the V5 in the car but he wouldn't go with that!
Said he needed the weight to do the brake test proper...I think he was just scared of getting his hands dirty on a real car without electronic
bits!!

Find a better MOT station... old car friendly ones are out there. I struck gold with one practically next door, the gaffer comes out to do the
test himself, "I used to have one of these..." Then his mate comes in-"Yeh I had one too, blah blah blah..." Never looked like failing yet!

I suggest that you call VOSA on 0870 6060440. I've found them very helpful and I would think it worthwhile letting them know that this particular
garage aren't using the system properly, ie not just noting N/A regarding the chassis plate. As per my recent series of articles lack of a comm plate
is not a valid reason for them not to complete the test.
