Hi All
I've decided that I'm going for a bare metal respray for a couple of reasons -
The last respray it had (circa '97 2 POs ago) seems like a fairly shoddy job and is cracking off.
Second there is a fair chunk of rust coming throgh and I want to get it ALL.
I'm planning on at least doing the priming myself but get a pro to do the welding. I'm just struggling to work out what order to do things. I really want
to know how long have I got once the old paint is stripped to get the new paint on before the rust starts?
Essentially I want to know if I should get the welding done before or after the paint stripping. Only problem is I don't know the full extent of the rust
until after the paint stripping.
If anyone has any idea it would really help my planning.
Cheers
Phil

Phil,
i'm not an expert however have started a full body off rebuild on a mark III and have decided to remove the layers of paint and sealant before i start
my welding. Removing the paint has introduced holes and rust patches that i didn't know existed!!!
if i were you i'd concentrate on removing all the paint so that you can find all of the rust; you don't want to pay for an expensive paint job for it
to bubble and blister with rust within six months.
hope that this helps and good luck with the restoration.

Hello Phil.
Al is right - best to strip the body before welding, as ther is sure to be more horrors lurking beneath the paint than can be seen at present. Only
problem is that the rust will start to attack bare metal almost immediately. Especially now that the cold dark winter months have arrived, so best
to plan to get the respray done as soon as possible following the welding repairs. Good luck, as I am about to do the same job to my 1500!
