    Never done the putting the paint on bit meself...
    
    but helped do the rest...
    
    Here's what we did...
    
    Get your panel on/repaired.
    High build primer.
    Dust coat. - splattery sort of coat.
    sanding with a flat block... shows you where you are high low... as you do/don't take off the dust coat.. (the low bits stay black)
    use filler to sort that out...
    flat this.
    dust coat.
    flat again.
    (hopefully it looks nice now... if not... repeat)
    (now I can't remember if we added primer over any filler at this stage ?)
    2 topcoats.
    
    apparently paint to thinners mix is important !
    
    and thats all I know about painting.
    
    I've done laods of components though. With Aerosols.
    My mates say I'm a bit of a tart, as everytime I replace bushes etc.. and have stuff apart... I paint everything I can before bolting it back on.
    
    so it all looks pretty... surprising the difference you can make with a can of matt black paint and 5 mins to spare.
    
    Practical classics have run a feature for the last 2 months on how to paint. I haven't read it, but it might be worth ordering the back issues.

      For decent results avoid painting while it is raining outside as humidity has an effect (causes the paint to bloom/go misty). Also avoid painting when its very cold, keeping the garage nice and warm with heaters definitly helps the finish.

        ...but spraying on the hottest week of the year causes the paint to go off a bit quick so you have to use loads of thinners. I proved this by trying it.
        
        Make sure you get a decent respirator mask too. You really don't want to be breathing any dust and fumes.
        
        erm, what else. Oh yes - mask off everything you don't want to paint - including the garage walls if necessary. You won't believe how much paint ends up in the atmosphere when you're spraying until you try it. I still keep finding components in my garage covered in a thick layer of red dust.
        
        Have you already got the equipment or do you need to buy that yet?
