I'm currently stripping the grime off the underbody of my MKIII to find lots of surface rust but not too many holes.
My plan was to give it a few coats of hammerite, then wax over the top with something similar to "Body Shutz". Can anyone advise whether this is the right
way to go, or suggest a better brush-on product? Finally - can anyone recomment a good seam sealent to put along the welds before painting the underneath?
Thanks, John

Hi there,
I have a practical classics magazine artical that does a product test on the best rust proofing products. If want, I can mail a copy of the artical to
you (I need an e-mail address).
If not, I can just read it again and let you know what the results were.
I have not had a great deal of success with Hammerite on anything but very clean surfaces. You need a rust converter product that changes the content
of the surface rust to kill it and prevent it from re-forming. Hammerite just seals it in - eventually, it will propogate.

Thanks Chrys!
- I'm on john.tabor@iee.org.
After speaking to Canley I was pointed in the direction of an "etch-primer". If anyone's got experience of a good one I'd be grateful to hear about
it.
Thanks, John

An etch primer is teh first layer of a matched paint system - usually cellulose. In order to get the best results, you need to apply the full
compliment so the system elements. this is:
etch primer, primer, top coat, laquer if necessary.
etch primer also works best on very clean metal.
Best bet is a rust converter (good quality one).
The top products in the artical I mentioned in the previous note were:
Hammerite Number 1 rust beater
Zinc 182
Both of these are easily obtainable in the UK.
