To assess any damage, you will have to strip the driveshaft down. The crucial question is whether you can get a new ball race to be a tight
press fit on the driveshaft, and whether the part of the shaft the needle roller race runs on has any surface damage. As I suggested, you
MIGHT get away with using some loctite bearing fit, but I wouldn't be too optimistic.
If you are lucky, you will get away with new bearings and grease seals. Since it would be better to do this job with the driveshaft off the
car, I'd replace the u/j unless you know it is perfect, and unless it is clearly free, replace the trunnion bushes as their frequent
semi-seizure may well contribute to the problem.
At worst you will have to replace the drivehaft itself (in which case the work on replacing the u/j is wasted, so perhaps not such a good
idea!!).
I suppose it all depends on how confident you are about extracting the rear hub and stripping down the driveshaft. If you are prepared to
do the job twice, then you could try just the new bearings if the bearing surfaces look promising, but if you want to be certain of only
doing the job once, then I'd budget on a new driveshaft.
Whether the bearing is making any noise or not, I'd not delay in repairing the problem as not only is the needle roller race running on
part of the shaft it shouldn't be, but the ball race sliding along the shaft is wearing it in a way it should not and making a repair less
and less feasible.
When you say you have a hub puller, I presume you are talking about a proper Triumph hub puller as sold by the club, Canley's etc. Any
proprietary puller is unlikely to do the job and is a waste of time!

Alan, fear not, if you need it, give us a shout and i can organise dropping it off, also, bought the bearing kit and shaft for both sides
of the car but only fitted one side, can let you have them for more or less what i paid, (rimmers sale prices, not rimmers full prices) if
you want,
cheers Calvin.

Calvin,
Sorry for delayed response. Up to eyes in marking assignments and catching up on after being on an educational visit with students.
Haven't had an evening to see inside of garage for days!
Have hopefully sourced a drive shaft & hub assembly complete from sportscar supplies so potentially a quick 'strip off - bolt on'
job coming up.
However will bear your offer in mind if it is wrong one or something!
The front end is distinctly less steamier and drier than when we met last thanks to recored radiator! Good one man specialist workshop
in Grimsby - even had two Triumph rads under counter awaiting a bit of attention and a home...one was a Spit but not full width like
mine....
