I am in process of rebuilding/renovating the rear suspension. As part of the process means the diff will be free of both axles, I decided take the bull by
the horns and remove the diff as well to stop the oil leaking from both inner axle shaft oil seals. I will then clean and repaint in a nice shiny
black.
The part I'm replacing is item 117952 on page 89 of Rimmers catalogue - the oil seal.
Now I know the manuals talk alot about special tools, but can anybody out there advise me what I need to purchase by way of pullers/extractors etc - that
arent "special" - so i can replace the seals. The bearings also have to come off, so I will change those as well!!
Thanks in advance

John,
I did this quite recently, and couldn't get the bearing off with the puller I was using. The feet / claws were too thick and wouldn't fit between the
brearing and the oil seal carrier. (KC Tools 3 legged puller. claws 3mm thick)
I put the bearing in the vice to try to push the shaft off the bearing. It slipped, so I tightened it up. Then the outer race shattered, so I very, very
carefully cut a slot in the inner race, and a sharp whack with a cold chisel shattered that too. I didn't bother with the puller for the other
side.
I'd always advocate using a puller, but you needn't be stuck if it doesn't go to plan

Thanks Ian for a well explained solution.
After extracting from the diff I may well take the pair of shafts and new bearings/seals to my local garage and ask them to to the job. their
labour rate is £35 per hour, and I can't imagine it would take a professional more than that!
Probably money well spent!

Depends really if your local garage is competent, lots aren't and that's how I got into Triumphs...

Take the Clean stub axles to an electric motor repair shop. They have exactly the right thin flat pullers to get behind the bearing.
They'll also stock the correct bearing (6205-2RS) and sell it for a few Quid.
It will help if you remove the spring wire retainer yourself so they don't have to fiddle with it.
