Rear axle, brakes, wheels and tyres.

I have a 1972 MK!V spit.My car is fitted with a strap type of propshaft,as i am a bit concerned about the condition of the straps ,i have read that it is ok to remove the straps and re-assemble the u/j without them. ie. just using two bolts, directly bolting each half of joint together.Is this 1.safe 2 acceptible procedure,bearing in mind that it may give me more out of balance vibration.
