All sort of clunks

I think my Diff is on the way out. It's started making a lot of clunks recently (even more than when i got the car 4 months ago). I checked all the UJ's and they seem to be ok.

I have a few questions that I've been storing up. Feel free to answer or laugh in equal parts

1) Is is possible to change a diff with a car on axle stands?
2) Is it easyish?
3) Having not had a classic car before I was wondering if the exchange surcharge for a reconditioned diff was added or taken away from the retail price of &163;357 on Rimmer Bros.
4) Is there any tests that have to be done on a re-fitted diff like you do when you balance a prop shaft?

I do like to get my hands dirty and do stuff on my car (one of the reasons is being poor after buying, insuring and taxing the car!) and if I could save a few hundred quid getting a diff fitted it would be nice.

Any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

  1) yes done it twice in 6 months of ownership, when one it came with broke and fitted lovely one, and again when i uprated engine
  2) easyer second time, but its patients and bit fdley with bolts, no more than a day job,
  3) found that getting a known diff of someone is cheaper! but curious to know answer myself about surcharges

    Well i guess I'll get looking for one then. I'll have a fiddle this weekend and familiarise myself with it a bit better. Thanks for your help.

      You pay the surcharge when you buy the reconditioned part (applies to most reconditioned items). When you return your worn item, PROVIDING YOUR ORIGINAL ITEM IS FIT TO RECONDITION, you get the surcharge back. Look carefully at the small print for two things:
      1. most traders quote the price for a reconditioned item and ADD the surcharge. Some however quote a price that INCLUDES the surcharge.
      2. Sometimes a trader will state what sorts of condition your item must be in to warrant repaying the surcharge. It should always be clean and complete, if for no other reason than it enables an assessment to be made over the shop counter.
      
      If no specifics are quoted, generally an item should be physically intact with nothing broken.

        You could well find one cheaper than Rimmers-I don't know it but you should definitely shop around a bit!

          Well I'm off to the spitfire graveyard in Sheffield tommorrow to see if they have one which is better than mine. I need a few other odd bits as well so I hope it's open saturdays.
