My Mk1V has a knock from the rear ,when rear wheels start to turn on pulling away.Had a look see ,there seems to be about 1inch or more of play in either
direction on the propshaft end of the diff , is this excessive? also this problem has only just appeared.
Its not easy to check for propshaft uj freeplay as there seems to be so much play in diff. any opinions welcome

If that 1 inch is the total movement between extremes when drive is being fully taken up, then it's ok. A total of 2 inches at the flange circumference
IS a little large, although this will also include any u/j play as well.

Thanks Chris, the problem is only the clonk on takeup at the moment ,I dont think it is the U/Js but i intend to remove propshaft and inspect and
change U/J s after the summer if necessary, will continue to enjoy unless it gets really bad, many thanks for your advice

David,
Suggest you jack up the rear, and try turning the wheels with the car in gear.
I suspect that the keyway that holds the hub onto the halfshaft may be wearing loose.
You'll feel significant movement of the wheel with no shaft movement.
Another way to check - put a socket on the hub nut and try to tighten it - if you can without a lot of strain, the hub is loose, because the
keyway has worn.
This is what happend to the Silverback at Le Mans. The Aces thought it might be loose U/js, propshaft flange bolts or diff quarter shaft bolts.
I thought it was the LSD. We checked the bolts and U'js, couldn't do anything about the LSD at the roadside and carried on. Evetually the
'clonk' became a 'cloooooooooooooooooooooooonk', then drive began to fail, and it neede to be trailered home. Again, I thought the LSD had worn
out and removed the diff. It is worn but only because of a hundred miles or so of trying to send all the power down one half shaft,as the other
wasn't connected to the wheel!
The answer is to frequently check the hub nut torque.

Hi John, had a look underneath between showers! ,there is no play on the keyways when i try to turn half shafts, also u/j s look ok .The
only movement seems to be on the diff input flange from propshaft, although not as bad as it looked at first(bout 20mm total)
looks like it is just slack movement inside the diff.Knocking is only there when i blip throttle while in gear.Everything else in the
area seems to be ok with no obvious loose bolts or connections so probably me just being too fussy!
many thanks for your input
Dave
