I have read the other messages on noises from the back end but can't seem to figure this out.

Under normal driving conditions, when I change gear there is a klonking noise from the rear end. When I start slowly from 1st gear, everything starts to judder. Starting with the hand brake on accentuates this. I tried this on a ramp to see what was going on. It looks like the prop shaft shakes a great deal and the drive shafts to a lesser extent. I have a feeling that my diff has gone but want to make sure before spending lots of money for a new one.

Any ideas? A klocking noise trouble shooting guide might be good

For some ideas on funny noises, (and other good advice) have a look on the Canley Classics website.
Difficult to tell, but your problem doesn't sound like a diff problem to me. They whine , or rumble, or suddenly go bang, but shouldn't judder. Juddering is usually a clutch or engine/gearbox mounting problem.
Also possible the u/j's in your propshaft are shot, but that would tend to give vibration at speed, especially over 40mph.
