I've just replaced a very leaky pinnion seal on My MkII Spitfire. The Flange nut was finger loose (and split-pinned so). After replacing the seal - I torqued up to the recommended setting, but now the diff is pretty stiff (if you get my driff).

My question is - was the flange nut deliberately loose to compensate for some kind of wear, and should I slacken this off again?

Any advise / knowledge greatfully recieved. Ta.
