Hi,
I've replaced my propshaft, took the Spitfire out for a drive, and there's a reasonably loud rumbling coming from the back end. There isn't any vibration,
and it's also present when out of gear, and comes in soon after moving off.
From my limited knowledge; I'm assuming that it's a wheel bearing.
However, from reading the MessageBoard and other sources, it sounds like it's
i) A complete pain
ii) Requires a special hub pulling tool (Churchill or something).
So my question to you experts is, does this sound like a wheel bearing?
Where can you buy/borrow one of these specialist tools from?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,
It does sound as though you have a wheelbearing gone. Apart from the complication of dismantling the hub, the inner bearing is a needle roller type
which runs directly on the halfshaft, ie no inner race. By the time you can hear th bearing rumble, the driveshaft is invariably scrap having been
permanently marked by the damaged bearing.
In view of this, you might want to consider purchasing a rebuilt exchange driveshaft. Be warned though that there is one specialist who has been
assembling driveshafts for many years with the inner seal reversed. This seal is intended to be orientated to keep water out, not to keep the grease
in.....
Cheers,
Bill.
