Diff Noise

1500 spitfire recently noticed knocking from the back. I have jacked up the car at the back and can not seem to find the cause during inspection. It is only noticeable durine driving. At times it is very bad and i think the diff may need to go. the universal joints seem ok. Any pointers on how i can check the joints or the diff. could a worn spring be making things worse

  have just read the canley classics bit...my diff whines, you can hear it at about 50-60mph in overdrive top (othertimes the engine makes to much noise) should i be worried? i assumed it was a 'normal' noise, it's been like it for 2 years/3000miles

    Check the oil is filled up... if it is... then you really should get it replaced...
    
    Eventually the diff will sieze, UJs pop? rear wheels fall off... all at 70mph? 30mph?
