Does anybody have any useful tips on how to extract the old UJ from the rear half shaft coupling? I've done this on a prop-shaft a long time ago but this
one seems to be much tighter. I've removed the circlips and cleaned off all the gunge/ WD40ed, but the technique described in the workshop manual for
extracting the cups seems to have no effect whatsoever. I dare not hit the yokes too hard in case I bend something - especially the edge where the cup is
meant to come out!

This might sound like a bit of a bodge but it usually works.
Find an old socket that will just inside the yoke a butt up to the cap. Then place this it to vice so that it clamps up to the socket and opposite side
of the yoke, slowly wind up the vice and hopefully it will free up both the cups. This will not allow complete removal of the UJ but should start it
off.
If it really stubborn try applying some heat to the yoke.
