hmm... wheel bearings or universal joints, although if it were the UJs you'd get a regular clicking noise when you are going in a straight line (once
the joints have warmed up)

Although I`m no mechanic I`ve just read my Haynes manual we are talking driveshaft UJs, aren't we???(help!!!)-

Yeah, that's correct, the ones at the back of the car, they are a bit of a pain to do yourself (especially if you don't have a decent vice!) your friendly local mechanic should be able to do it for less then &163;200 a side....-

Being new to this game I wonder if someone could clarify.
I think I'm getting this same sound from the back of my Spit' 1500. It's a strange sound, that seems to only click when coasting, (clutch dipped). It may be there all the time, but is drowned out with the engine noise, but I'm guessing that if it is the drive UJ's, then they may well only make the clicking sound, when there is no strain on them. Would this be correct.
Is that right also 200 quid a side for a garage to fit, for a part that costs a little under a tenner.. How easy/difficult is it to do myself ?

If you do need to fit new UJs then I would take the halfshafts and hub etc off the car - try to do the UJs yourself - if you fail - just get a garage to change the UJs for you and then fit them back yourself.
Bill did a very good article in the Courier a few months back about changing UJs - well worth digging out if you plan to do it yourself.
Taking the halfshafts of the car isnt a problem at all - just disconnect the brake lines (or just remove the cylinders) and undo the radius arm, spring eye and shock off the vertical link. Very easy job - take about 30 minutes a side.
Alternatively if your halfshaft/flange yokes are knackered (worn by the UJs) then you can always get a set of reconditioned ones from Canley:

Thanks for the info. I'll look into this and see what I can see. I might be getting the bearings exchanged, I've got a garage that'll do it for free so I may ask them to do these too...
I'm not sure I can stretch to new(recon) halfshafts at the mo', as I've just had the diff replaced, poor old car, I think by the end of it, I'll have a totally replaced motor...

I got my car 11 months and 1 week ago...
Front springs, engine back plate, clutch twice, od gearbox, prop, diff twice, UJs, halfshafts, vertical links, radius arms, rear brakes...
Not all of that needed replacing because it was broke mind you... uprated or upgraded...
Things still to do... HS4s, 4-2-1 exhaust, wheels, door glass... for now...!

Ahhh the joys of UJs......
Replace them while its just a clicking UJ, and not a destroyed half-shaft.
As for replacing bits... I owned my old spitfire 1500 for 5 years and by the end of it the chassis (except the front end), the bonnet mid section, scuttle, rear deck and diff, wishbones, steering wheel, instruments and seats were the only bits I DIDN'T have to replace after 2 'part restorations'.
There are only two good types of spitfire, very rare ones that have been kept dry, well maintained and lightly used and ones somemeone else has been through the traumas and cost of rebuilding.....
Sorry, but after owning 3 Heralds, 2 Spits and a GT6, with a couple of BMWs and an MGF
in between, I'm just realistic!

Well I'm not even going to go in to how much I had to replace on my 1500 in it's sadly short 1 1/2 years of ownership... it's just too scary to think about - and I bought the car because the parts were cheap... not in that quantity however...

Funny, just about the one thing I haven't done in 20 odd years (10 with Triumphs) is change a UJ - never had access to a vice! Some 'colleagues' changed one for me at work once on a Herald 13/60 (no problem, done it laods of times mate!). It 'fell apart' going home on the M5 at 70mph and bent the drive shaft.
I've had 3 front trunnions fall apart,
but only one back wheel fall off...........

would get some kind of reaction and story telling of parts replaced but I didn't think it would include half a dozzen posts on how to de-grease a loved one !!! Am I on the right board here ???
@ James I found the artical you were talking about, it was in Courier 279 Sept. 2003, very good and it explains a lot of things (cheers Bill).

So long as you have a good strong vice, changing the UJ's is easy - just take your time and get them in nice and straight!
I'd happily charge &163;400 to change a pair of UJ's - any takers
I've included this picture before, but unless you set the UJ's tight with the thicker circlips where necessary, they will still go clickerty click, even after you've fitted new ones. I wonder how I figured that one out
Your shafts should
be able to stand up on their UJ's without assistance.

... Just dont get them mixed up James! I'm sure Yoghurt wouldn't be any good on brake pads..... Whilst Copper, being an important component of the electron transport chain is also found in the liver, but I feel copperslip would be a poor substitute.

Copperslip - surely good for the joints? DC and the older members etc... cheaper than cod-liver oil surely... those pots are huge...

How would the copperslip be administerd James? Does anyone else remember the Gunk 'Degrease a loved one' advert that ran in practical classics a few years ago?

I had a simular problem and it was the universal joint although it did not look at first inspection to be faulty. But once car was jacked up it was
clearly the UJ at fault. Once changed no problem with clicking noise.
