Hi all,
Does anyone know where the best value for money gearboxes are? New or used I am not too bothered, but prices are a different issue (problem of being a
student!). Would highly prefer, but not essential as done til now without.
Cheers,
Billy

I think T D Fitchett do the best price recon boxes & they seem to have a good reputation.
Have you considered rebuilding it yourself? I've just done one for the first time & although I was a little daunted to start with, it was a very
satisfying job!

Whereever you buy be SURE you know what you're getting - some boxes are more "con" than "re". There are really no new gears out there but synchro
rings, bearings etc should all be available new. Hub springs should be replaced as should all the needle rollers - it's very easy to throw a box
together and make it work but you won't get strength, longevity of low noise from such a beast. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
I know that boxes built to a price are rarely the best. If you want a quiet box get yours rebuilt, the gear sets if reuseable, should run together
well and keep the noise down. I've just done mine and had to replace reverse, it's now noisey but that was inevitable!

If you live in Surrey, do NOT buy a gearbox from Hardy Engineering, they are clueless about mainshaft tips, and I wasted a lot of time and
money with them. Several attempts at rebuilding one of my D-type overdrive boxes years back resulted in early failure.
Old man Hardy was rude and aggressive, and refused to accept that it was their fault that my box only lasted 2,000 miles!
Henceforth I referred to them as HARDLY Engineering.
