I have a Spit 1500 with intermittant overdrive which, by the look of this messageboard , is a fairly common problem. I'm stuck at the very first stage of
getting to the transmission tunnel. I've removed the o/d switch from the gear knob and undone the lock nut (eventually!) however the gear kob is still
firmly stuck in place. Can anybody tell me if it should just pull off or is it threaded on the lever and therefore requires unscrewing?

It unscrews like a normal threaded bolt/nut i.e. no left hand thread or anything. Give it a squirt with WD40.

Depends which g/knob you have.
The o/d cap pullsoff, then disc the two wires, then unscrew the lock nut on the stick below the knob, then unscrew the lock nut inside that has two
cut outs in the nut then the knob should just slide of the keywey on the stick.

Thanks gentlemen, I thought there might be more than one answer! Guess what, I think I may have something in between. The thread on the lever
extends below the base of the knob but there is no locking nut beneath it. There does appear to be a keyway (groove) on either side of the
lever shaft so I guess it could be the pull off type with the lock nut missing or ...... maybe not!

Did you check the switch before proceeding as I believe these are a weak point. Also the wiring to the OD. Could save you a lot of effort.

Turn the car upside down, and it should just slip off...
