Hiya all, I'm new to the TSSC and new to my Spitfire. It's a Spit IV with 1500 running gear with o/d. My speedo has not worked since I bought the car a few
months ago. It appears the gray plastic end of the cable that clips onto the back of the speedo has snapped away from the rest of the outer sheath. I've
tried a repair using some plastic tubing and a hoseclip but so far no luck. The inner cable appears ok (square on speedo end, flat on the gearbox end). Any
ideas as to how to identify wheather it's the cable or angle drive etc? Will I have to strip all the trim out to get at the angle drive? Any help would be
gratefully recieved!!.

You need to see if the speedo end of the inner cable turns when the car moves. If so the cable and angle drive are ok, and the problem is either the
cable not engaging properly with the speedo unit, or the speedo unit is dead.
If the cable doesn't turn, remove it at both ends and see if there is any break in it. If yes, then you've probably found your answer. If not, then you
MAY be able to see if the angle drive turns with the car moving, but the necessary acrobatics are probably dangerous in a moving car! Having got that
far, I suggest you take the angle drive off and see if there is still positive drive through the unit. Which if yes, would leave only the drive gears
in the back of the overdrive....................
Fair number of Spitfire's in the classifieds.............................!!!!!

Thanks Chris, inner cable isn't broken so I'll investigate further when I get back from my holidays as the weather is terrible here in Wales at the
moment!

There is also the scenario that the end cap may have come off the angle drive therefore pushing the gear pinion out , so not mating to drive the cable
to the gauge.
I know, its just happened to me.
After driving back from Le Mans, where it stopped working and then going straight to Cumbria, camping, belting round the lanes and coming back to
Yorkshire, the end plates of the angle drive had been pushed out and were still sat on the chassis rail !!.
Reassembled it , burred over the alloy casting , a smear of araldite and it now drives the cable and the gauge works(typical Yorkshire, saved
£45 to £60 !!)
