Transmision Tunnel Access Panel

Whilst surfing the net today on some North American Triumph sites I came across an article that described creating a hinged access panel on the transmission tunnel cover to enable the topping up of the gearbox without the need to remove the cover each time. Has anyone done this to their Spitfire?(or Herald, GT6 etc?) - It seems a good idea provided you can get a good enough seal.

I manufactured access panels for both the clutch slave cylinder and gearbox oil level plugs, and am very pleased with the result.

Using a section of 1mm. aluminium plate it is very easily made, and fits securely, and is easily removed and refitted.

      Here's mine. The round panel not the rectangular one. (that's because the GRP gearbox cover wasn't right). S/t screws into clips around the hole. Closed cell foam stick to the panel to seal out hot air/oil smoke etc.

        Thanks John, Looks like I'll be getting the Dremel out tommorrow to make the cut!, I'll post a picture if I'm successful, if not I may have order a GRP cover!

        Having learned a valuable lesson on the Ten Countries last Sept (thanks Walker Bros) I now jack the car up, undo the filler plug from underneath and from above the gearbox I run a pipe into the filler hole and pour the oil via a funnel from above. Simple!
