Hello All
I'm getting a noise from the my rear axel that sounds like knocking. The knocking speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car. When accelerating the
noise gets quieter or dissappears all together or just carries on as a rumbling noise. Does this sound like my differential is wearing out? I have looked
on Rimmer Brothers for differentials. They look really expensive, even with an exchange for my old part. What is fair to pay for a reconditioned
differential? How many hours do you think I would get asked to pay for on installation?
Thanks
Chris

If its a knocking noise I would check your universal joints first. A diff tends to whine when its tired and come on slowly. UJ's usually start
complaining by knocking. Good news is UJ's = cheap, diff = £££'s

You can pick up second hand diffs on ebay for as little as £25. Of course you've got to know what you're loooking at though.
But if the surchage is £100, you could use one of these for the exchange if yours is beyond hope (or before you take yourS out)
and save some cash.

I had the same problem, replaced ujs at a small cost and a weekend's work. Problem solved.

you could find its better or worse round right or left hand bends... or wiggle the car around on a traight bit and see if its goes away/comes back
again..
if it is worn UJ's you can use this to diagnose which side it is too... although I can never remember which way means which UJ.

but if it's the prop shaft uj(s) turning won't make a difference, it'll be there all the time
