depends what car and therefore which gearbox you are referring to..
I've got a 1967 Spit III, which doesn't have synchro on first, so first is crotchety unless you double declutch, or are stationary, or, maybe you do
have synchro on first, but the synchro ring is worn.
My synchro ring on 3rd is worn, but not bad enough for me to do anything about it yet, but its a bit clickety going in.
If 1st gear sounds like reverse, then its prob not synchro on first, and thats all that is.
