Hi Jonathon,
depends what car and therefore which gearbox you are referring to..
I've got a 1967 Spit III, which doesn't have synchro on first, so first is crotchety unless you double declutch, or are stationary, or, maybe you do have synchro on first, but the synchro ring is worn.
My synchro ring on 3rd is worn, but not bad enough for me to do anything about it yet, but its a bit clickety going in.
If 1st gear sounds like reverse, then its prob not synchro on first, and thats all that is.

This is nothing to worry about if it is as you decribe (MKIV/1500 gearbox). The reason you can hear this is because the gearing differential between first and any other gear is quite large. This means the gear sets/layshaft are going to be spinning at very different speeds when you change down and so the synchro ring has an awful lot of work to do and it's not surprising that it can only just keep up.
The trick is to be a little gentle when changing down at speed, you need to 'pursuade' the gears in rather than 'throw' it in. Either that or learn to 'heel and toe', that's how the racers do quick gear changes
