I am rebuilding a gear box. I am using needle rollers from Rimmers. They supply a bag of 50 but say to use only 24 at each end. I cannot find any other
references to how many to use.
I tipped the old needle rollers out of the lay shaft and there were 25 in each end.
25 of the Rimmers rollers will fit in comfortably.
So my inclination is to fit 25.
Those of you out there who have rebuilt gear boxes - have you used 24 or 25??
Thanks in anticipation...

Van,
I used 25 in mine and haven't had any problems with them. My thoughts were if they supply 50 then I should fit 50...!
On the other hand though I wouldn't expect that only using 24 of the little buggers would really make that much difference but will allow a bit more
room for grease etc.

i read on the dolomite board a while ago that some of the needle bearings used now are metric hence 24 not 25 used??

Thanks for the quick replies!
Interesting about metric ones, I would have thought if any part like a bearing was a metric one off the shelf it would have to be
indistinguishably close to the imperial one.
The old ones are 2.37 mm dia (possibly designed to work in a gap of 1/10"?) The new ones are 2.36 mm, so the new ones are actually slightly
smaller than the used ones!
Both old and new layshafts are within spec, so it is not a case of layshaft and needle rollers being supplied in matched sizes.

I got mine from Rimmer too and followed their instructions - 24 each end.
Yet to test it though. Fingers crossed!

Now done 2,400 miles on gearbox with 25 each end and everything seems fine.
