I am trying to fix a leak in the clutch slave cylinder in my Mk iv and have bought what appears to be the standard repair kit - you can see the kit in this
link to Rimmers:

I may be being stupid but I cant figure out where the flat rubber disk (shown as the bottom of the 4 bits in the picture) goes - there wasnt one when I
took the cylinder apart! What I have got instead is a rubber "cup" that fits over the end of the cylinder which needs to replacing - but I havent seen any
mention anywhere of this bit as a part in its own right.
Any help very much appreciated
Ian

Thanks Roger, that does help.
From what I can tell the parts marked on your diagram as 2B and 3B (the dust cover retainer and the dust cover) appear to be combined in one rubber
piece in the parts I have taken off my car.
Looks like I will have to try an get hold of a dust cover retainer - at least I know what it's called now!

Hi Ian,
Is there a slot cut in the side of your cylinder for the pinchbolt to pass through, or is there a groove cut around the entire circumference for the
same purpose? The correct slave cylinder for your car has a 7/8" bore and a metal cap with rubber disc for keeping the muck out at the end - this is
the type with the notch down one side. Earlier Spitfires and Heralds with the coil spring clutch have a 3/4" bore cylinder with a rubber cap on the end
- this type has the groove around it's entire circumference.
It's possible you have the wrong cylinder fitted by a DPO, or someone has improvised after destroying the metal cap when removing it for rebuilding.
The wrong cylinder will give a short clutch throw which may make disengagement marginal.
Cheers,
Bill.

Hi Bill
The cylinder has a groove cut on just one side to let the pinchbolt pass and I have never noticed any problems with the clutch disengaging. Would
the rubber cap fit on the later cylinder? (there is a lip on the rubber cap that appears to fit into a groove cut just in from the end of the
cylinder so it looks as though they should go together).

Ian

Hi Ian,
It sounds like you've got the correct cylinder. It'a actually very difficult to remove the metal cover without destroying it, so more than
likely a previous owner has fitted the rubber cap from another cylinder. It's a good fix and I would re-use the cap you have if it's
serviceable, otherwise buy a kit for another similar cylinder and rob it for the end cover. I think the cover from the SP2001 kit for the 3/4"
slave will fit, worth it for a couple of quid.
Cheers,
Bill.

Roger
Thanks for that - I have already ordered a repair kit for the cylinder for the early spitfires/heralds so hopfully these seals will fit. If not
this gives me something else to try!

Ian
