Most of the time the gearbox on my 1500 is spot on and really smooth though sometimes it crunches really badly both when putting in gear and when removing.
Is it a clutch problem? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

it could be the bushes in the linkage for the gear-lever...see how 'neutral' feels in another spit, if yours feels loose in comparison try changing
them. Having said that, it took me a while to get used to the gearbox in my spitfire, it's not that you have to change gear slowley, just that you need
to kind of let the gear-lever find it's own way across the gearbox, insted of pushing it in yourself (difficult to explain) like you do in modern
cars....if you are new to spitfire's give it time.....
