Just won a modified chasis 12/50 engine, gearbox and diff on e-bay.
I am more of a spitfire specialist. Can anyone give advice on building and running a Midge. Where to obtain parts and what sort of expence I am likely to have to complete the build

I am intrigued by the body construction - ply skinned in aluminium and whether an SVA would be required.
I have discovered archive material on the JC Midge in the Jan '97 Courier, they appear to be quite rare.
I'd be interested in knowing if there are many about.

Why intrigued? Good solid construction, inexpensive materials - quite heavy though. Should not need SVA if built on a Herald chassis.

Not that rare for a Triumph kit, plenty built.

D. Kit Conversions
This is where a kit of new parts is added to an existing vehicle or old parts are added to a kit comprising a manufactured body/chassis/monocoque bodyshell. The general appearance of the vehicle will change and result in a revised description on the registration document/Certificate.

A vehicle will retain its donor registration mark if either the original unmodified chassis or unaltered monocoque bodyshell and two other major components are used.

If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis/bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An ESVA/SVA/MSVA test will be required to register the vehicle.

Where there are insufficient parts from a donor vehicle or in cases where the original registration mark is unknown, an ESVA/SVA/MSVAcertificate will be required to register the vehicle and a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.

Well if you making a midge the that is narrower than a herald, A Burlinrton Arrow/Berretta is lengthed and narrowed, so the chassis is altered, so SVA needed.

my herald based kit car uses a shortened chassis, the reg doc has been changed to herald 1200 sport, retains the correct number plate and has not been subject to a sva, but it was built in 1980 so things may have been different then!

Mine is a Burlington Arrow also registered approx 1980, no SVA then, but as you can see It is a Q plate.

It was given this at the insistence of the local Licencing office, no amount of talking colud persuade the officer that I could you the original number made any difference, they even sent two police detectives 50 miles too see that the car existed and watch me stamp the chassis number on to it.

Has the car ever been used on the road? Mine was used for a couple of years before it was retired to a barn! What is your car registered as?

First registered in 1987, used every summer for about five years then taken of road to modify, returned to road for another six, last on road 1999. Now undergoing rebuild.

The car is registered as a Burlinton Sports.

I wouldnt worry about the sva then, if you do require one and you can prove the car has been used on the road legaly then you can get away without doing the test.

That is true you do not need an SVA if the car is already registered, only newly built cars require it.
