How's progress for this year's Birkett?
The Spitfire Squadron are in; the team will be:

Richard King
Clive Gimson

Ian Smythe

IE the same as last year, except for Martyn Adams, who has stepped down to let Ian in - thank you, Martyn!
I hear that Martyn hopes to be in a TR8 team, so we might have THREE Triumph teams!

The Spitfire Aces, Vin and Jon, have volunteered already to be my right hands but we will need more helpers, on the pit wall, in the garage and out on the course as spotters. It's at Silverstone on the 27th October, so you are guaranteed a cold, probably windy and if this year is anything to go by a wet day, but one full of excitement and motor racing. It is possible that I will have some free tickets for early volunteers. Roll up, roll up!

John, you forgot to mention that the teams that compete on the day comprise of every type of motor sport car you can imagine!, last time there were some very intrepid Fraser Nash's - hue-ooooge wire wheels and wooden cars hurtling round - they had to leave as soon as the racing was over as they were driven home and had no lights!

small cateram style rockets and f1 lookalikes, remember it's Silverstone one of the best Formula 1 race tracks (not a track in a field!) well worth getting the free tickets, (or even paying to see!) as everyone is very competitive and theres slow cars mixing it up with very (VERY) fast cars - no accidents as cars compete on a very friendly level (but one Triumph team won last year and the other lost....

)

everyone is welcome to mingle with the cars in the pits and get into the spirit of the day, even if you've never been to a race track, worth a go.....

Those Frazer Nash guys had some bottle - take a look at the way the wheels are flexing as he corners.

And he's right, ladies 'n' gennelmen! The Birkett is feast of the fast and furious, but don't take our word for it.

This followed last years event, and the Triumph teams didn't get a mention, but hey! There were FIFTY ONE teams and nearly 300 cars taking part!
There will be no less this year.

what is involved with the spotting? Is that a silly question? What does one spot? Short of that i have a cub scout badge in tea making.

The Birkett regs say that if two team cars are on the track at once, then those laps don't count towards the team total.
But in the event of a team car breaking down and being unable to continue a lap, the team may have to wait until the organisers inform the team of this.
Meanwhile, laps may be lost with NO car on track.
But once a car fails to appear on the next lap, tthe manager will want to send out the another car ASAP.
Without info, he will risk losing even more laps if both cars are running.

If you read my report of the 2006 Birkett, you will remember than some dork of a manager asked the Clerk of the Course the question, " Can my drivers carry a mobile phone, to ring in if they break down?", which was exactly my plan, except I wasn't so stupid as to ask a question to which the answer will certainly be ,"NO!" If he had kept quiet, this ploy would have worked, for me and many other managers, even if it does bend the rules a bit.

So we must go back to a time-honoured method, of spotters. These are team members, stationed around the course, who can tell the manager of a breakdown much quicker than the organisers. They used to have to run in from their station to the pits - now they can use their mobiles! Same effect, just needs a lot more people!

As a spotter, you will have a section of the track to monitor. Spotters can move about as long as they can keep an eye on their part of the track, and can 'swap' with adjacent spotters if they wish. The ideal is for the manager to have so many spotters that he can relieve them from time to time, and give them pit time, meal time and ahem, loo time. Otherwise, bring a bottle.
