It is said that in any town or city we are never further than 20 ft from a rat.
And rats are the unacceptable face of the Rodent Kingdom.
It's just that they are bashful and shy, and we rarely see them. (Only their work)
I'm sure this goes double for mice. They are there, it's just that we rarely see them, 'cause they are nocturnal, small and don't bother us, unless we leave stuff out they can use. Do you feed birds in your garden? They'll be the ones clearing up the spilt bird food (unless you have pigeons, the avian rats, or hedgehogs, a delightful addition to any garden)
And bats? It's not your lap top, it's all the tiny midges, flys and moths that are in the evening air of your garden. Are you sitting on a patio, or next to a wall, nice and warm from the day's sun? That attracts the insects. Invest in a bat box, that translates the bat's supersonic sonar into our frequencies; you'll hear them patrolling, with regular fast clicks, that speed up and peak as they zero in on some unfortunate bug. You probably have pipistrelles, the smaller and more common bat, about the size of a mouse with wings. Super little creatures, eat tons (literally!) of those annoying insects, totally harmless and they WON'T get in your hair!

Since this is a wildlife thread.......
We have hedgehogs in the garden. We feed them and put out water.
Last night, Linda found one, collapsed by the water bowl.
It was on its side, breathing noisily and with great effort.
Clearly it had suddenly been stricken witjh something.
I'm an anaesthetist - I recognised respiratory obstruction, and we diagnosed that it had eaten a crushed maize put out for the birds, that had 'gone down the wrong way'
Attempts with various instruments to find and remove the obstructing food failed.
A vet's advice was that all that could be done was to leave it and hope it got better.
We left it in a plastic bin, one of those stacking storage bins, with some shredded paper and some food (soft cat food)
Put bin on my work bench in the open garage, so dogs and cats in the night could not get at the poor creature.
In the morning went out to see, expecting a corpse, hoping for a live animal.
NOTHING THERE.
It must have recovered, climbed up the paper straw and out of the box, fallen off the bench (900mm) and been able to walk away.
HOW TOUGH ARE HEDGEHOGS?

Hedgehogs are well adapted to falling small distances. They roll up into a ball and when they land their prickles act as shock absorbers. After a couple of revolutions to diserpate the energy, they un roll and just walk away.
Why is it I have less time to watch wildlife films since buying my Spitfire?

Hedgehogs have been known to climb up ivy, enter bedroom windows
and DEVOUR babies. The answer is to wrap them in clay and bake over
a slow fire. Pre race BBQ alternative??-

That is a good way of keeping the babies safe, but surely then eating them produces the same end result as if the hedgehog had done the deed....
I'm all for population reduction starting at the bottom, so I'm in.
Where do we get the clay from?????

Going back to the original topic use the mouse trap but bait it with chocolate. If you can get the other half to leave it alone it will catch mice no problem. As regards bats i cant stand them so shall be looking for a blunderbuss for sale on ebay.-

As an expert in these matters I suggest a rigorous education and training plan be put in place to bring the mice to a level of expertise to replace the garage fairies that fix one's car when it is broken. That's what I am hoping for over the next few weeks (see other post under Brands Hatch). I know it can be done; I saw a documentary series on it called 'Bagpuss' where a team of highly motivated rodents mended a variety of things.
