Clive, these thingies are very good a stiffening the whole structure, even if they don't see a racetrack.
Mine hasn't been raced, or rallied but it has been on a racetrack and it makes the whole car nicely stiff
why not keep it?

&163;560 it the new figure, but Fabricage might make you one for less if you cross their palm with cash and speak nicely, grovel etc.....
I think its the best cage on the market, made my car stiff as anything with the hardtop on, doesnt really squeek much for a bolt together either, provided you really do the nuts up hard!

What does it weigh Dave? Are aluminium cages still available? The wife's Gitfire has a roll over bar fitted and I have to say I hate it, it fouls the seat so I can't push it back far enough to get a comfortable driving position, I'd have it out tomorrow if she's let me.-

Jason, ally alloy cages are very not indicated, apparently one failed after water had settled in one of the tubes and caused a great deal of corrosion, but was apparently perfect on external apperance

Too heavy!!! I think 35kilos or so, but dont quote me on that, its all centred mass so it doesnt effect handling, cause the mass is not polar mass but central....so the polar moments stay the same. Actually most mass is rearward so it might improve weight dist by a few &%.
Alloy cage not sure, you could get one made I guess, but illegal on the track as its brittle etc - therefor not off the shelf item.-

Well I was thinking that for a road car, if you were not too bothered about roll over protection but were fitting a cage for stiffening the car then alloy would be the way to go. All said and done I don't like the aesthetic compromise on my Vitesse, I was very wary of putting high backed seats in it because I think it sort of spoils the lines, but then does sitting it and I'm not going to stop doing that

One is a piece of tube that sticks up above the door line.

You choose.
I didn't let my son drive his Spitfire until one was fitted.
But then I'm biased.
I see what people do to themselves by being scraped along the road by their cars/bikes.

While I take your point John, the trouble is that the diagonal brace prevents use of the passenger seat. HAving said that , ti will make a lovely brace if the sills need doing as well

Thing is, I don't think the frequency of roll overs in our cars is sufficient enough to warrant a roll over bar, if it were I probably wouldn't be driving one. Having said that I've been upside down in a "classic", I wasn't driving - it was "interesting" I don't remember much apart from the hysterical laughter when we realised we were still alive and that the sticky wetness running down my neck wasn't body fluids but the contents of a can of coke I was still holding, albeit upside down!
I think I'm far more likely to suffer a lapse of concentration because I can't get comfortable in the seat of the Sixfire and have an accident because of the roll bar! Thank heaven for personal choice, clean lines for me. Besides, if I turned it over I think I;d be pretty dead any whichway, roll bar or not. For 30,000 miles a year I drive a Toyota, no roll bar in that but it does have something like 17 airbags - wonder if it would float?-

A roll bar is one thing.. but a roll cage an altogether scarier thing in a road car imo.
I'm sure its been mentioned here before..
I wouldn't like to drive my race car without a helmet, as if I had even a minor bump, I think my head could be smacked against the rollcage Normal belts and a rollcage and a reasonable bump means fractured skull I reckon.
I've heard it say that the rollcage protects you,.. and your helmet protects your head when it hits the rollcage.

Good point David - I like the wind in the hair motoring, would kind of spoil it if I had to wear a helmet - I wonder what PC Plod would make of me doing that? -

Now David! you know the regs about cages, heads shouldn't be near any cage element unless its padded
I think Full Cages on road cars are entirely stupid, as are 2.5PI engines, uprated gearboxes and anything else remotely associated with being different.
in MY honest oppinion, everybody should drive exactly the same kind of car, in exactly the same state as it left the factory
I also think that motorcycles shouldn't exceed 250cc, nor exceed 60mph and convertible cars banned for thier ability to corrupt the young and old alike

dunno about all that other stuff,.. sounds a bit daft to me..
but next time you are in a car with a full cage and a race seat.. lean your head to the right...
You'll find it is entirely possible to hit your head on the top bar that goes between the front and rear hoops,
even though it has plenty of padding, I wouldn't like my head to hit it without a helmet.
thats all..
I have a mate who races a caterham and drives it on the highway sometimes...
He wears a helmet all the time in it.. hasn't been stopped by Mr Plod yet !

New to posting messages, but here we go
Not sure if you got the last mail I sent. Saw the car pics and wondered if you might part with the wheels. If you are interested in selling those aswell then send me a pic.
Also - for those with roll cages, reason for wanting to fit one for road car is safety, particularly on side impact.
Seems a sensible compromise safety vs aesthetics ? Concerned about banging head - anyone know what height causes the problem - i'm 5'11" ??

you could fit a roll bar for aesthetic reasons......
you could adapt and fit two trgb tripod roll hoops in a spitfire with adaptors...
you could have very thick padded cossetting leather mr2 seats infront of the roll bar...
and you might even have them at the chromers at the moment to be back in time for a trip to the LeMans Classic..
well you could....-

My next question for other members, and maybe you in particular, Vin, is what seats from other cars do make the best substitutes. I am looking for leather seats - are MR2 seats easy to adapt and fit and look okay ?

MR2 seats unfortunately aren't easy to adapt and essentially don't fit.
I got mine to fit with a lot of fettling, the drivers seat is amazing - it has knobs on the side to do lumbar support and move the side wing in and out to cradle your torso.
Had to cut those knobs off to get the seats in, and shorten the subframes keeping the runners - which in theory should 'run' but don't as it's a very tight fit - the seat is a touch higher than I would like also but I can live with that, square seat in a not-square spit floor pan (back of floor pan by tunnel is intruded by chassis moulding).
The seat base is well sprung - actually suspended by proper springs, going over bumps with hard suspension (I've got 480lbs front spring!) are taken care of by the suspension in the seats!
If I was doing it again I would use the mr2 seat but the floor would be cut and welded to be square and the seat would be stripped to the metal and narrowed and the seat base would be cut and welded to be shallower. But it's in now and I don't have the time or inclination to go that far, best get a seat that fits!
I think they look great though! (and the feel of seat leather against naked flesh is...............I'll get my coat....)-

I will rule out MR2 seats - thanks for your advice. Popular choice seems to be early MX5 seats - will see if I can track a good pair down on ebay.

Pretty impressve bar, not many in the UK race with one like that, none in the TR/TSSC championship. Looks like a American style to me.

Do you remember that article by John Thomason in the Courier a while ago about the stiffness of the Spitfire chassis?
He, or someone, designed a simple pyramidal strut (not a rollover bar, it was lower) that enormously increased the low stiffness, and this looks very like that design.
