As things seem to be a bit quiet on the technical front, I have attached some pics of the Vitesse for your perusal and comments.
Also an update on the work to date,
A pretty lousy respray has been done by me using a low pressure sprayer. (A sort of hoover with attitude) A few runs and and enough orange peel to satisfy
Hammerite it was finished. Not concours but at least one colour, and enough overspray that my patio is now covered in little dots of white as is the garage
etc.
The engine has been rebuilt and comes out at 2.7 litres. The pistons took ages to arrive, but looked very pretty when they eventually turned up They come
from the states and are manufactured by CP Pistons. Compression ratio is 11: 1.The cam comes from Pipers via Darryl at Racetorations. It has a duration of
292 degrees and lift of .480†at the valve. This cam appears to be unique to him. Darryl also supplied the big expensive head
gasket and the valve springs. (Helpful guy who did not overcharge and offered information freely.)
The carbs seem a bit on the large side to me (triple 48 Webers) but they were on the car when I bought it, and they appear to have worked for the last
owner...
The ignition system is a programmed unit from Emerald. Again this was on the car when I bought it and I have yet to have a look at the map.
The air box is something I have knocked up, I think that I will end up fitting an air scoop on the bonnet to feed cold air in, and maybe even some louvres
on the side.
Perhaps you guys can help me with a problem that I have got over but still puzzles me. The engine fouled the steering rack. So I fitted new mountings but
it still hit even when I adjusted them to the highest position. I ended up fitting a couple of spacers between the mounts and the engine to give me
clearance, but is this normal??
Jobs remaining are adapting and fitting the bonnet, setting up the suspension geometry, and rolling road set up. My aim is to test the car somewhere by the
end of February and then if all goes well enter the car into the pre 66 saloon car race at Thruxton on Easter bank holiday Monday. As an aside if any of
you wanted to run in this race and have a Herald or Vitesse contact the Classic Touring Car Race Club. If you have not raced at Thruxton this is an
excellent opportunity to sample this incredible track.
