All,
Any one, starting or continuing in motorsport, may be baffled by the choice of helmets on offer.
There are several standards, the good old kitemark British Standard, the US Snell standard and now there is a Euro standard.
But these are only minimum standards, and two helmets, both of which bear the standard marks, can be have prices ten times different.
Is the costlier helmet ten times safer?
We have no way of knowing.
Motor Cycle News has been campaigning for this situation to be improved.
Worse than the 'minimum standard only' situation, they have uncovered evidence of corruption in the standard system.
They have persuaded the Road Safety Minister Stephen Ladyman to take forward a scheme to test and grade helmets in a way similar to the NCAP system for new
cars.

On your behalf, I asked the MSA if they were aware of this initiative, as it has obvious implications for motorsport, not only biking.
They responded:
Good Morning
We are well aware of the activities within Motorcycle News concerning helmets. As a broadbrush comment this initiative comes out of the fact that the
actual performance of helmets all produced against Euro regulation 22.05 is so variable. Some are excellent, some are rubbish. The Snell and BS Standards
are generally more rigorous so there is not a wide spectrum of performance across the different manufacturers.
The MSA generally follows FIA requirements, the only current difference between FIA & MSA is that the MSA continue to accept BS 6658 Type A whereas FIA
do not. As a principle the MSA will maintain parity with the FIA, will always refer to a standard and will not specify any particular manufacturer.

So it's over to you, girls and boys.
It seems that the MSA is perfectly supine to the FIA on safety. Even when a British initiative offers improved safety, or at least for us to make a better
decision on how much to spend on our safety, they are content to let us go on guessing.
But if you are going to be buying a helmet soon, I suggest that you hold on and see if this takes off.
A letter to your MP asking them to ask the Minister what they intend to do will help it get going.
Note: If you write to your MP, they MUST ask the Minister, who MUST reply.
Letters to ministries can be ignored and petitions will be.
