All,
Just read on the TRR board that Tony Beadle has been sacked as Editor of Triumph World.

Apparently, new publishers, many established columnists sacked, Tony follows.
TW wasn't my CoT, but it is/was a bastion of the Triumph, er, World.
What changes are afoot?
Clearly, new policies and styles - we shall see.

Just picked up this months Triumph world and i must say what a load of bilge if they stopped putting adverts in to fill the space and actually put some material in of real content like they used to.Ihave 8 months left of my subscription if it gets no better i will not be renewing.Good luck to Tony and i actually enjoyed the mag before the takeover we will have to wait and see what the new regime brings

  Shame, Tony was a great supporter of all things Triumph.
  
  And they sacked Robin Penrice too!

  The idiots who make such decisions obviously see TW as a cash cow, and not much more.
  
  Until I left the UK 5 years ago, I bought every issue of Practical Classics, which was already degenerating into Craptical Plastics.
  
  I do not miss it, but I am saddened by the thought of TW degenerating into a similar format, as it is one of the two magazines I still subscribe to, other than the TSSC Courier magazine, these being my only remaining hard-copy contacts with the UK Triumph movement...I am also concerned that with TW going monthly, the subscription will rise to unacceptable levels, and that will be that.
  
  As others have said, this may well be the beginning of the end for TW.
  
  Good Luck to Tony, Robin & others...good people treated badly by a big company, run by morons.

    if the readership base does collapse, that will be the end of Triumph World as a cashcow...
    
    the new owners will have to come up with something damn good to beat it the way it was, somehow I think that may be too much of a tall order...
    
    Do the same people now own the MG, Mini and Landrover equivalents???

      Got my copy yesterday with a cover note saying two issues of subscription left to go. Renew for 12 copies at Â£40+, or Â£10.17 a quarter direct debit.
      Read it with a cup of coffee today and still had half the coffee left when put the mag down. Poor.
      That's it for me.

        Having just heard the news that Tony Beadle and other contributors from the Triumph World magazine have been sacked I will not be renewing my subscription when the time arises. I believe there is a saying which is "If it ain't broke don't fix it", unfortunately they don't seem to have heard of this saying. I expect that the magazine will deteriorate to the point that it just becomes another advert based magazine with very little content that is of interest to the Triumph enthusiast. I feel sorry for Tony Beadle and the other contributors who have in my humble opinion done a great job and have given many Triumph enthusiasts enormus reading pleasure over the past twelve years. Quite what they hope to acheive by sacking true Triumph enthusiasts who obvisouly have a passion for Triumph cars is beyond me. I for one would not be at all surprised if the Triumph World magazine disappears from the shelves, it certainly deserves to after this shocking treatment. Steve

        The disgraceful sacking of Tony by Kelsey does not seem surprising in retrospect. All the clues were there; the crappy 'new' layout; valued contributors 'finishing' and the commercial push to monthly. Kelsey customer service is also pathetic, so all in all I will be surprised if the magazine is still on the shelves come Christmas.
        At least I have the first 60 editions, all nicely bound, to remember them by.
        Farewell Tony, perhaps the Courier and other Club magazines could use you freelance?

        Having attended the excellent Brooklands Show yesterday, I was shocked to hear of the sacking of Tony as editor of Triumph World. Tony was one of the first people I met when I got involved with the Triumph fraternity, when he was kind enough to ask about the history of my car. He was a welcome sight at most of the mail shows during the summer and his excellent magazine helped get me through the winter with a regular fix of news and feature cars.
        
        I have written to Kelsey to express my anger and disappointment, as well as informing them that I will never purchase their magazine again and I urge others to write as well so they understand what effect their decision has made.
        
        I wish Tony all the best for the future and hope he finds another outlet for his enthusiastic writing and love for our cars.

        Whilst I realised what had happened what really brought it home at Brooklands yesterday was that Tony's Vitesse Van was there and the "World" bit of the "Triumph World" sign writing on the sides had been covered over in masking tape. This just made me feel sad that soemone who has been so enthusiastic and dedicated so much of his time to the Triumph movement has been treated so badly.

  I have been in contact with Phil Weedon who is a Director at Kelsey Publishing and I was not overly impressed with his reply. I have also taken the opportunity to e-mail Tony and thank him for the last few years of pleasurable reading.
  
  I donÂ’t want to take anything away from the excellent work done by the TSSC and the clubs own publication. But I feel that it is also good for the Triumph movement to have an independent publication.
  
  I like others have not liked the direction that Triumph World has taken. What would peoples views be if a competitor was published and what would they like to see from such a magazine?

    This Triumph World shake up is long overdue.
    
    Triumph World had become an old man's magazine. Stale and uninteresting.
    
    The woman draped on the bonnet of her TR7 for example. Shallow anecdotes with risque storylines?
    
    Good trees died to print that rubbish!
    
    I cancelled my subscription 18 months ago, I will give it another chance now.
    
    Hopefully there will be some forward looking articles in it for a change.

      Wayne trust me they have taken away the risque story lines etc etc and replaced it with nothin but advertising in a classic car weekly manner full of advertising thats all Triumph World is now mate save yer money trust us it is now tosh !

        I suppose I mean how to use & enjoy & improve your Triumph in the present day as opposed to reminiscing about the glory days when the cars were being built, which is the overall impression that Triumph World has left me with.
        
        Cobwebs, dusty, old peoples home all spring to mind when I think of that magazine.
        
        The TSSC Courier is far and away a better publication than Triumph World.

        Wayne i get the point your making but isint most the classic car scene based on nostalga and heritage.Forward thinking articles ? its not like Triumph are going to start producing cars again i always found Triumph World a good mix modified Tiumphs (Rover engined stags Gitfires etc) concours Triumphs and just general everyday drivers.
        
        When all said and done Triumph World was being sold to a very small audience (compared to MG, Landrover ,Ford) and as such tried to be all things to all people.
        
        Without the nostalgia and heritage behind our cars why bother ? my Wifes old 1994 Ford Escort Cabriolet did nearly all things better than my Spitfire except for one thing it didint put the same smile on my face or remind of the once great motoring heritage this country had (especially felt here in the midlands)

        I maybe should have phrased it 'contemporary articles' - I was trying to make the case for less nostalgia based contenet.
        
        I disagree about the good mix. I knew i was time to cancel my subscription when each month I found myself flicking through the magazine in under five minutes just finding the same content.
        
        On the whole just nostalgia & chequebook restorations.
        
        As for being sold to a very small audience, that is probably an indictment of the content.
        
        There is a potentially large audience for a magazine devoted just to Triumphs.
        
        The TSSC alone has 10,000 + members I think (correct me if I am wrong there). Even that is a good potential audience for a specialist magazine. Add all the other clubs and it is a very healthy potential market.
        
        Sales must have been dire for the publishers to have a mass cull of the editorial staff - money talks and if the content of any mag is being bought by the public then the publishers always sit back, leave well alone and rub their hands while watching the pennies roll in.
        
        Yes there is a place for nostalgia, but in my opinion TW had too much of it.
        
        You must agree that for the Triumph scene (and classic car scene) to survive then young people need to become interested in it? Well I don't imagine TW would appeal to anyone living in the 21st century, just people pining for the good old days of 1950 - 1970.
        
        Maybe it won't improve, but they would do well to read a few recent Couriers. The only criticism I have of The Courier is the format. (ie size) I would imagine that page layout on an A5 magazine is much harder because of space constrictions, but it always has something I like to read.
        
        It also has things that I don't read, but will appeal to others - that is good balance. (Including nostalgia)

        That was a good considered reply Wayne, generally we are in agreement, and the thing to remember is that magazines and museums may come and go, but the TSSC is hopefully here to stay, let's keep it that way.
        
        I must be one of those odd people, but I read everything about Triumphs, be they Stag, or Herald, 1300 FWD Saloon or Vitesse etc., because I have found that if I learn just a few more things, then my knowlege is enhanced. There is a lot of 'cross-pollination' or commonality of parts between most of our cars.
        
        I also enjoy reading all of the different types of articles.
        
        Perhaps I am in the minority?

        I don't think you're in the minority Leon, I too enjoy reading the differing articles on all types of Triumph, I also subscribe to Triumph World, and whilst I do not agree with the 'sacking' of Tony and his brethren, I will continue to support the magazine for fear that it will cease altogether. Notwithstanding that, I agree that the TSSC magazine is well worth the subscription we all pay towards it through our membership fees, and for this reason feel it is one of (if not the) best Triumph publications around.
        
        For my sins I am also a member of CT and the SOC and enjoy their respective magazines and the different type of articles they contain to satisfy my thirst for all things Triumph!

        It's all about what 'rings your bell'.
        
        I enjoyed reading what some of the 'old folks' had to say about when our cars were new, about why certain things were done the way they were. That is not to say that I do not also enjoy articles on using and improving your Triumph nowadays as well.
        
        I am glad that I had the opportunity to meet certain 'old' folk, like Harry & Peggy Webster, like Kas Kastner and Fred Nicklin.
        
        I feel my life to be a richer experience for it.
        
        Remember this Wayne, one day you too will be an old person!

      I don't intend to publish what he said as this was a private conversation where he answered questions that I had raised. I would encourage others however to contact Kelsey Publishing themselves to do the same and express their opions. That way they will understand the sense of feeling that this situation has created.
