Just an outline that may help others if anything like this was to occur:
INCIDENT
When returning from Clasic Le Mans, my Spit bottomed out on the ferry deck, because of acute loading angle. One of the silencer boxes pulled back, off, down
and dug into deck
RESULT
As the box is mounted on to the vertical of the valance to boot, it ripped open the seam from side to side the valance to boot, split valance to wing
seams, kinked boot and valance panels, distorted wing to boot alignment and put two stress kinks in both rear wings.
Not a piece of rot/rust anywhere and had two new wings.
This was at 5mph on loading
COST OF REPAIR
&163;1768.00
ADVICE
Request a damage claim form from on board ferry staff
Take photos.They do the same
Then take obvious action of repair quote
Send if requested all supporting paperwork/photos(history before, and damage)to customer claims
Put pressure on them to react asap (as I needed my car for other events I had already paid for)
RESULT
Brittany Ferries admitted liability, could not have been more apologetic, gave sympathetic ear and put pressure on assessors to give go ahead on repair.
Had it been &163;500 or less then no immediate problem, but because of my value damage ,assessors have to be called in
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Ferry return 10th
Documents and photos posted recorded delivery 12th
" " " " received 13th
Confirmation letter of receipt received 14th
Assessor visited 19th, advised me of no problem on commencing repair.
Await verbal/written confirmation by 21st
Panels received already and repair to start within hrs of confirmation
TAKE NOTE
Did any body try and help your historic car to board with more care than a normal road car?
Were there any specific signs?
Get a senior officer to accompany you on inspection of repair on board.
Albeit I had a very helpful lady in assisting my claim at Brittany Ferries and could not be more apologetic, I sense that there may not be any preventative
measures put into place to assist any classic car/driver with any possible future occurance whilst on board/loading.
If you book en bloc with with a tour/fery organiser ensure they advise ferry operator of any possibilities of problems.

Normally the loading crews do a good job of spotting low cars and 1001 blocks of wood in every shape/size/length appear to smooth the ramp. Loading
ferries in the week before Le Mans sees a lot of this going on
If they don't react you can just stop and attract their attention.
Of course some times you just get unlucky and it doesn't go even when you think it will.

Sort of reaffirms faith in Humankind, a big company bending over backwards to help, all is well with the world again.

The only good thing was I sounded like the Stingay and Cobra at Le Mans when I was on my way back up the A34 and M1......... or I think I did 'cos
I had ear plugs in with having only one box!

Well, the nice lady from Brittany ferries rang today and confirmed that our garage can go ahead with the repairs as their assessors had agreed to the
cost.
After their assessors had sub contracted the inspection out to a Yorkshire based firm,oh how lucky, their man rang me to say he was on his way to make
the inspection.
I said I would like to be there when he was inspecting and he wanted to know why. When I told him it was down to the fact it wasnt a euro box but a
well kept classic , he said not to worry as he had renovated MGs and Healey s personally and was sympathetic to my concerns.(how lucky again)
He then rang back that same day and he advised not worry as he was reccomending the authorisation to repair.
The garge confirmed authorisation and I can now sit back and wait for completion. Most of the time I will be waiting whilst on holiday abroad ,
....journeying by flight. . . . . . .not by ferry!
Now .....if I can get someone to reverse into my bonnet!!
So from leaving Le Mans on the 10th, to this date, the whole thing has taken only 12 working days to agree on commencement.
Not too bad I suppose.
