Can anyone clarify the situation regarding taking a car for an MOT when not taxed / MOT'd currently?
My car has been off the road for a couple of years, and is currently SORN and not MOT'd. I understand that (providing the car is in a roadworthy condition)
I am legally allowed to drive it to an MOT centre without a valid MOT so long as I can prove where I am going - and I assume that the same applies with the
tax / SORN (given that you can't tax a car without an MOT this would be logical)... but what I'm not sure about is the situation if the car fails the MOT -
am I then allowed to drive it home (if it fails on a minor point that I can repair at home and that doesn't make the car unsafe to drive (such as the
windscreen wipers on a dry day)?
Any advice gratefully received.

Check it out for sure but I think you are OK to drive too an MOT test without an MOT, of course if the car fails then you need to rectify it there as
you cannot drive it away from the test centre with no ticket.
Bear in mind the insurance position also - does your policy have conditions that could affect cover? Best phone your underwriter and ask.

This topic is definately in the archives...
You must have an appointment at an MOT station and it must be reasonably close to where you keep the car (ie not necessarily the closest but you
must be reasonable). you must also take a reasonably direct route. If you stop off to do other things on the way and are caught then you will be in
trouble.
If it fails it can only be driven to a place of repair - that can be your home or a garage. If however, it fails miserably the MOT station can
effectively impound it and you will have to arrange a trailer or something.

You are allowed to drive it to a pre-booked appointment at a testing station and you can also drive it home again if it fails.
Not sure about the SORN bit though.

neil,
as previously stated as long as you have booked your mot and given the cars registration mark to the garage for identity if stopped by the
authorities you are ok to drive it there by most direct route.as for failing the test if the tester deems the car to be in a severly dangerous
condition he can prevent you from driving it away this would apply if taxed or not,but far as i'm aware if it is a trivial failure point then it is
not compulsory to fix it at that garage and again it must be returned home or your chosen point of repair by most direct route.when the vehicle is
ready for a retest you have to go through it all again.....(i'm not a legal oddbod so if it's not entirely correct someone may post otherwise)but
there is a recent thread on this very subject some where on the message board.....

As previously stated, you may drive the car to an MoT appointment without an MoT Certificate and you may drive it to a place for repair
afterwards if it fails. The garage have no legal power to prevent this.
As for Tax, you simply back date the Tax to the beginning of the month when you took it for MoT (whether it passes, or fails), but obviously
you will need it to pass an MoT at sometime to do this.
