When the front of my bonnet rusted away I welded curved pieces of steel where the sidelights/indicators used to be because I couldn't afford the proper
panels. I put round indicators on and wired in the sidelights in the halogen headlight conversion.
Now I have welded in the correct new panels and I am putting rectangular lights back in. Can I wire in the sidelights in these as well as those in the
headlights, or do I have to choose one or the other??

Hi Van
I don't know the legal position, but looking at the numbers of trucks which carry an array of spotlights on the roof, which are run with 'sidelights',
I can't see anyone hassling you about it.
The only risk, if you can call it one, is that you'll have 4 lamps to go wrong at MOT time!

Legally a car must show two white lights to the front and two red lights to the rear. Headlamps believe it or not are extra to this! As long as you
have matching lights on either side in both quantity, brightness and shape I can't see any problem with two sidelights as separate units plus two
in the headlamps. These are factory approved positions and the law can't argue with that part of it, so as long as they don't dazzle oncoming
drivers there's no problem at all. The Minis in The Italian Job would be illegal nowadays as they have three spots, not one or two pairs, however
the Rover 'Cyclops' is not as the single central headlamps were factory fitted lights not aftermarket add-ons. With the HGV spots, as long as they
dip or are just used as sidelamps they're legal, but they can still be prosecuted for dazzling on-coming vehicles.

Guys
Under 'The Road Vehciles Lighting Regulations 1989, Regulations 18 and 20, Schedule 2 Part 1' (Part 2 deals with motorcycles), there is a
requirement to have two front positon lamps fitted. Under Regulation 18, this means that you may ONLY have two (one either side in the stated
positions) fitted.
Any vehicle displaying more than this commits an offence, although there are different regulations for over head position lamps on high
vehicles.
Hope this helps.
