Online Tax Renewal

I've never done it online before. I've always trudged down to the PO, waited in the queue with someone coughing germs on the back of my neck. Handed over my documents, sometimes been told to come back next week because the 12 month disks have run out and the new ones are on order.

Today I logged onto http://www.direct.gov.uk/taxdisk.

Keyed in my reference number printed on the V11 and three minutes later my new tax disk for the coming year is in the post.

I didn't even have to dig out my MOT / Insurance documents - they just knew I was covered with a quick check.

Fantastical!!

And best bit of all.....

If you get free tax discs, it costs THEM to send it to you!

That has got to be good in my book.

  It is a good idea and we have used the same method for taxing all our cars, however, don't you get a huge smug feeling when you go to the post office and tax your car for 12 months for free when everyone else is paying &163;180 odd quid.

    Indeed! Due to the fact my Vectra SRi chucks out so much CO2 it gives me a carbon arse-print the size of a dinosaur, Mr Brown likes to take &163;190 a year off me
    
    Still, I really like the look on the post office workers face as they realise I don't have to pay them anything when taxing the spit

Nice idea, but something really sucks.

This year it cost me &163;175, next year maybe a &194;&163;1000.

The TSSC membership winscreen sticker is purple, the tax disc is purple, the car is purple.

Does anyone know what colour the DVLA and TSSC are thinking of next year? It would be handy so that I can let the sprayshop know.

      Apparently next year tax discs are to be tan coloured , so those with beige acclaims can have a beige car with a vile tan interior & tan disc.....nice..!!!
      
      Anyway....I think if you have a tax exempt classic you should pride yourself by ALWAYS renewing at the PO and as you hand over your documents bellow loudly "A YEARS FREE TAX PLEASE" . Then you can walk out laughing at all the poor sods who are handing over &163;96 +.......!!!!

        Yep, think a trip to the post office is the way to continue for smugness' sake, the tax on a Saab 900 XS Turbo Wotsit came to &163;200+, which now covers all of my insurance for a year on the herald, and the &194;&163;1000+ insurance on the Saab (as a "young" driver - do they expect me to race the 22 tonne beast or something?! Hard enough to park!) covers the vast majority of the purchase price of the herald, with the &163;160 I got for the SORNed Saab making up the difference. A wonderful little classic car for "nothing" isn't to be sniffed at!
