  Not sure about the cars even the DVLA don't know about, or if anyone has every actually been fined for not SORNing their vehicle, but one way to get around the fine (first time around) is to know that the SORN is a one-way process.
  
  Unlike road tax, where you pay yer money and get a tax disk, with SORN you fill in the form and post it off. The VLA DON'T send you a SORN-disk.
  
  So, first time the warning letter comes around, swear blind you sent it in and they can't proove it either way (and as a general principle in law if you post something it is considered to be delivered - yea, comical I know).
  
  Anyway, when this happened to me, they just sent me a new SORN to fill in and dropped the fine.

  My Vitesse has been off the road for "some considerable time" and so I asked the DVLA if SORN applied - I'd never received anything from them on SORN - amongst other blurb they said "The scheme only applies to vehicle where a licence was in force on or after 31 January 1998. As your vehicle was unlicensed on this date, it does not fall into the SORN scheme. It will only become liable to SORN if it is relicensed and then subsequently taken off the road."
  
  So if the car's been untaxed since before 31/1/98 then you're OK.

    There appears to have been some quite substantial shaking up of the rules and regs. It now seems to be guilty until proven even more guilty!!
    
    Don't forget this excercise is all about ensuring they know who owns what car, and what better way then to send out a fine to every 'non-taxed' and 'non-SORNed' vehicle owner and await the results!
    
    I too got caught by the SORN regs a few years ago. I falsely assumed the Declaration sent in by a previous owner dated the day I bought the car from him, and handed into the LVLO with the V5 was valid for me. Wrong......
    
    I ain't getting caught again unless someone can assure me I am OK.
    
    I think a call / email to the DVLA is in order asap.

      It was May 2003 when I enquired It's current info but there's no harm in enquiring, they do reply to email vehicles.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk

    Be aware though if a new owner registers the vehicle after 31/1/98 and you are not going to tax it you will need to declare SORN even if the vehicle has not been licenced since before 31/1/98.
    Also in reply to a previous message about SORN. In the not to distant future a receipt will be issued to all licensing or SORN applications so no receipt no excuse so the answer i did send one in will be of no use unless you can provide a receipt.

      Sorry Jason. My reply has nothing to do with SORNs or fines.
      
      I have recently moved to Brighton and trying to find out if there is a 'triumph' garage or somewhere I could get my Herald serviced etc...in the area. I noted from one of your earlier messages that you were travelling from Brighton to attend a pageant and wondered if you knew of anywhere.
