Tax Exemption

Hi All,

A freind of mine is in the process of putting his MKIV spitfire back on the road. Were not to sure if the vehicle is tax exempt or not.

According to Quiller Triumphs info at

States spitfire MKIV to FH52541 Is tax exempt.

His cars chassis is FH52235 so it should be elidgable but others seem to think it wont be.

Is there an official DVLA online database or something we can check and clarify this?

  Phil - do you mean the chassis number or is that the commission number, or the body (tub) number? I thought the DVLA (nowadays) were more interested in the age of the tub, rather than anything else (correct me if I'm wrong!). Sounds like it should be alright though, but I'm really not an authority.

  Hi Philip,
  I think the best way to find out if the car is or can be tax exempt is to phone the archives. The phone number you can get from head office.
  I believe (tho I may be wrong) that if it is they then send you a letter to take to DVLA. I am not sure it is so much on chassis or body numbers but on dates of registration.

    The DVLA try and let you think that it's the date of first registration, but in fact it's the date of manufacture that is important. Some Spitfires hung around for quite a long time before they were sold. So this can make a difference. So far as I know, the only way to be sure of the date of manufacture is to get a certificate from the BMIHT who have all the old BL records. They charge about &163;25. I'm struggling with my memory here, but I think the relevant date is on or before 31.12.72. No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
