  Hi Huw.The best way to see if your car was built before 1st jan 73 is to get in touch with the heritage centre at Gaydon.They have all the production record and can issue a certificate that will be accepted as proof.You can do it on line.

  My old MKIV was Built August and registered August '73 the Comm was FH58306 and chassis 58195FH if your numbers are anywhere near this range it is unlikely it was built in '72. You should check the International Spitfire Database;

  and see where your comm number fits, to get a good idea of the production cut off dates between years.
  
  P.S. my current MKIV is exempt....doesn't work though!

  You don't have to go anywhere to find this information - the TSSC has it AND it's posted on this site!
  
  Under 'The Cars/Spitfire/FAQ', you'll find that any MKIV with a chassis number earlier than FH52541 was built before Jan 1st 1973 and is Tax exempt.
  
  It also has the GT6 chassis number too.
  There is an awful lot of information available through the club you know, that's why we pay our cash.
