Whatever happens you need to send off a request for a V5C with quoting the VIN and enclosing the £19.
If there is no record, they will send it all back (inc the cheque), hopefully along with teh forms for applying for a new one.
Then you need the MOT on the VIN, then the trip to the LVLO, then they will issue a new MOT and the tax disc shortly after.
A mate did it all with an MGB I sold him that had the wrong registration on it.
You will still need the letter stating the build date, either from the TSSC, or a letter from Gaydon.
